Workspace

Get an inside look at a few different Remote Year workspaces through this blog post.

Will the workspace be similar from city to city?

Just as Remote Year accommodations vary from city to city, so do Remote Year workspaces. You’ll always have 24 /7 access, reliable connectivity, a maximum 30-minute commute from your home, and available private spaces.

There are a few variable factors across workspaces, including:

    • Number, size of workspaces: sometimes we use multiple spaces
    • Mix of coworkers: Remotes, locals, expats, travelers
    • Atmosphere: more corporate to cafe style
    • Number, size, and reservation system of private spaces and if they are soundproof
    • Food/drink: some have cafes and limit outside food, some offer kitchen access, some do not

When can I access the workspace?

You’ll always have 24/7 access to the Remote Year workspace. Non-traditional business hours may be offered at another facility if one of the workspaces does not typically offer 24/7 access.

What is the workspace WiFi like?

It’s been said that WiFi is just as important as air on Remote Year. We don’t take that as a joke—we know that connectivity is the foundation for this lifestyle. In order to guarantee high quality connectivity, we:

    • Have a network engineer who audits all of our workspaces and is on call for our team to resolve issues, and
    • Have minimum requirements of 50MBs. It’s often more, but if it is a city that only offers low bandwidth, we make sure to “throttle” each user so that everyone can safely take their video calls, and
    • Provide hotspots in all workspaces in case of unexpected issues.

We cannot guarantee that you will never experience an internet drop. Anyone who guarantees that—whether it be in Chicago, London, Mexico City, Chiang Mai, or anywhere else in the world—is making a false guarantee. Even the most solid internet setups can be affected by extreme weather, political situations, or overall city power, as you probably have experienced at multiple points in your life!

Are there private spaces available in the workspace?

Yes, Remotes have access to a private call booth or a private space to jump in and out of throughout the day. They are not available to be occupied all day, every day. Plus, many are small and / or windowless, so they would not be comfortable to sit in for prolonged periods of time. Remote Year does not offer reservable private offices.

There’s a few ways Remotes typically take calls at Remote Year workspaces:

    • Jumping into a call booth for a call as needed for important or private calls. In most workspaces, you can reserve call booths ahead of time.
    • In open spaces at the workspace that are designated quiet areas, using appropriate voice volume.
    • Sometimes Remotes take calls and work from their apartments. This varies month by month, as we cannot guarantee call quality internet in apartments.

Can I see some examples of Remote Year workspaces in different cities?

Sure! Please note that these workspaces are subject to change and represent a variation among the different regions to which Remote Year itineraries travel.
