Arrival

How do I arrange travel to my first city?

As outlined in our Payment Policies, transportation to your initial Remote Year destination and from your final Remote Year destination is not included in the cost of Remote Year. You are responsible for booking your flight to arrive in the first city on your itinerary.

Airtreks, Remote Year’s travel concierge partner, would be happy to help look into the best flight options for you. Submit your travel request here, and they will respond within 1 business day.

Other popular booking sites amongst the Remote Nation include Google Flights, Momondo, Skyscanner and Kiwi.

Will someone be waiting for me at the airport?

If you arrive between 9am and 11pm local time on your program’s scheduled Arrival Day someone will be waiting for you. Remote Year staff will be at the airport to meet Remotes as they arrive within this time frame. If you arrive outside of the time frame, or outside of the official Arrival Day, we'll let you know where to meet us for check-in, but we are unable to meet you at the airport.

One week prior to Arrival Day, you will communicate your travel notes via email or Slack. We’ll be the people with the massive Remote Year sign waiting at baggage claim, you won’t miss us.

I can’t arrive on Arrival Day, what should I do?

That’s OK! It is up to each individual to decide when they'd like to arrive and we encourage Remotes to travel when it is best for their personal and/or professional schedules.

If you arrive before Arrival Day, please note your Remote Year accommodations will not be available until 2pm on Arrival Day. You are responsible for arranging both your transport from the airport and your accommodations prior to your Remote Year check-in day / time.

If you arrive after Arrival Day, your Remote Year Program Leader and / or City Team will recommend the best way to get from the airport to your accommodation (hint—that typically means taking an Uber or public transit!) Someone from the Remote Year team will meet you at your accommodation to get you checked in, or you’ll receive check in instructions beforehand, along with access details if they key is left in a lockbox or with reception / security. Please note that program orientation is typically the first Saturday after Arrival Day, so try to arrive by then!

Will I need to show proof of onward travel since I booked a one way ticket?

This depends on the airline and / or country of departure. Sometimes you’ll be asked of proof of onward travel when leaving your home country, sometimes you won’t. One week before your program’s Arrival Day, you’ll receive an email from the Remote Year Travel Team with your exit confirmation from the first city on your itinerary. Take a screenshot of this and save it on your phone to access when leaving your home country and arriving in your first Remote Year destination.
