When do we travel from one destination to the next?
Your Remote Year Travel Day(s) will typically be scheduled for weekends—keep in mind this could mean anytime between Friday (late afternoon) through Sunday (evening) in the local time zones in which you’re traveling. If you’re traveling with your Remote Year community on your planned travel route, your transportation to and from the airport will be arranged and booked by the Travel Team.
Details for "Travel Day" are posted on the Global Hub in advance of your travel day, with details about the flight number, route, and luggage rules.
- Take a look at this spreadsheet for the planned dates of your specific program's Travel Day(s). It is unlikely these will shift, but they are subject to change. If any changes are made, we will update you.
- Check out all Remote Year Itineraries for a larger view of when programs will be where.
When do I receive information about where I'm living?
Your Program Leader will send you an email one week before you arrive to your next city with the details of your new home (address, flatmates, Google Map link and accommodation notes). This email also includes information about your Travel Day (or Arrival Day, if it's month one), workspace and links to the City Guide and Marketplace.
In what area / neighborhood are we living in each destination?
Our City Guides are a treasure trove of information! Take a peek and learn more about where you'll live and work each month, city hot spots recommended by Remotes and locals alike and the history that has shaped the city and country you'll be living in for a month.
When and how do I book Remote Year experiences, like Track Events and Side Trips?
The Remote Year Marketplace is your one-stop-shop for all things programming—Local Experiences, Track Events, Positive Impact, Side Trips and more. You will receive Marketplace access about one month before your program's Arrival Day.
For more information on Remote Year experiences, visit the specific FAQs about Programming while on RY.
Do I need a visa for the countries in my itinerary?
Each Remote is responsible for securing their own visas for each destination on their itinerary, and due to the constantly evolving nature of visa / immigration regulations and the fact that our Remotes hold passports from many different countries, it is not possible for Remote Year to advise on the visa process.
Consulting an immigration / visa legal professional or getting in touch with the relevant embassy is a reliable way to determine whether you need a visa to travel to the countries on your Remote Year itinerary. Remote Year will provide travel or accommodation documentation when it is necessary for Remotes to secure their visas.
The websites we link to below should not be considered as rendering immigration or visa advice, rather, they are just general resources that other people have found helpful. If necessary, we suggest that you consult an immigration/visa legal professional.
Visa List—Data here is primarily collected from public sources like Wikipedia, embassy and national websites of different countries.
Passport Index—Pick your home country, and the site will tell you whether a visa is required for any other country. This is a good starting point, but it's not official government information, so it shouldn't be your only source of research.
- If a visa is needed for a certain country, it is advisable to then connect with the relevant embassy. For example, if you're an Indian passport holder needing a visa for Mexico, the best place to start is the Mexican Embassy to India.
Visa HQ—This online tool is similar to Passport Index, but can be used as another information source.
- Visa HQ will inform you if a tourist visa is required for particular countries and they will also offer to obtain visas for you. For those types of services, you can choose to obtain the visa yourself by working with an embassy or government agency, or enlist the help of our partners listed below.
Can I host visitors while I’m on Remote Year?
Yes. Visitor policies in Remote Year accommodations vary depending on destination, accommodation, and the preferences of your flatmate(s). Your accommodations in each city will be different, as such, the space available for visitors will vary. It is your responsibility to determine if your living space is sufficient for visitors.
When visitors can be accommodated, you have up to 10 nights, each month, to share with visitors in Remote Year accommodations. So, if you have two visitors staying with you for a night, this counts as two visitor nights, and so on. The first five visitor nights each month will come at no cost. Any subsequent nights will cost $15 USD per night, which will apply to your bill for the following month.
If you are planning to have visitors, it is necessary to follow the visitor policies outlined in section 5 of the Participant Policies.
When will I receive my first bill for my Remote Year program?
Your monthly payment is due on the first of each month, starting the first month of your program. EX—If your program’s first full month is January, with an Arrival Day of December 30, your first payment would be due on January 1. Or, if your program’s first full month is March, with an Arrival Day of March 3, your first payment would be due on March 1.
You’ll receive an email from the Remote Year Finance Team (payments@remoteyear.com) at least one week before your Arrival Day with instructions for setting up your billing account.
